Social and Emotional Issues of Gifted Girls

When did "run like a girl" become an insult?
Peer relations and society's expectation of females cause girls to underperform.

"Girls' underachievement often comes later in life of in adulthood when they fear becoming involved in enterprises where they can't be assured of success (Davis, G., Rimm, S., & Siegle, D., 2011, p. 428)."

Do you remember Hermione Granger from Harry Potter? She makes up 1/3rd of the Harry Potter trio and I would say she's the backbone and reason behind some of Harry's best decisions. She is gifted and talented in more than just academics - she can apply her knowledge to real life situations. Emma Watson is very similar. She embraces her intellect and chooses to stimulate her mind with higher education.

Girls and Non-Mathematical, Non-Scientific Aspirations

What is the REAL reason why more women aren't in technology?

Women have traditionally shied away from technological fields due to historical and political happenings of the past. Some thought that they couldn't excel in the field. Some have even overlooked it as a career choice because it was unappealing though they excelled in it. Mark Fidelman of Forbes interviewed a small group of successful women and concluded that the problem is that women are uneducated on the benefits of pursuing a technological career. While I'm not sure if the lack of women in the technological field can be summarized in that one issue, Fidelman does bring up a key point in how to inspire youth to be involved in math and science careers. The foundation to love math and science should be laid out when children are young. Foster a sense of value in math and science in females and continue to encourage that intelligence throughout their lives. Maybe we'll start to see an increase in women in technological fields as we see an increase in educators striving to promote STEM/STEAM education.
