General Overview

Additional Information:
  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) definition of physically disabled/orthopedically impaired: "Orthopedic impairments means a severe orthopedic impairment that adversely affects a child's education performance. The term includes impairments caused by congenital anomaly...impairments caused by disease...and impairments from other causes..." (McLeskey et al. 2013).
  • Children with sensory disabilities tend to be more concrete in thinking, but IQ tests require abstract thinking for higher scoring (Davis et al. 2011).
  • Children should be viewed as primarily a gifted student who may need some special accommodations because of his/her disability (Davis et al 2011).
  • One reason many physically disabled and gifted students are not identified is because they are often placed in special education classrooms and are therefore separated from the general education students (Davis et al., 2011).
